The City of Rosemead's Parks and Recreation Department is looking for an enthusiastic, creative, dynamic, and team-oriented individual who enjoys working with children. The ideal candidate will introduce children ages 3-5 to a classroom-style environment that will prepare them for a school setting.

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, plans, organizes, and participates in educational and recreational playschool programs in a positive learning environment to prepare children to enter a school setting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Creates a positive learning environment to provide classroom instruction to preschool aged children.
• Oversees educational and recreational programs to encourage children to explore learning through arts and crafts, music, literature, numbers and shapes, letter recognition, and field trips.
• Prepares lesson plans and implements approved curriculum.
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior; monitors behavior and resolves issues within scope of authority and training.
• Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the student.
• Prepares classroom for daily planned activities; gathers necessary materials and supplies.
• Maintains attendance records, observation notes, and student files.
• Plans and coordinates the work of teacher aides and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips.
• Cleans and maintains classroom, furnishings, and equipment.
• Inspects facilities for damage, hazards and vandalism; follows all safety rules and regulations to minimize risk of accidents; opens up, closes and locks preschool facilities; identifies conditions needing repair or maintenance, and requests additional maintenance services.
• Monitors health and safety of children and facilities.
• Provides information to parents regarding child's progress, abilities, skill development, and concerns.
• Updates and maintains a variety of electronic and paper files, records, reports, and documents; processes forms, records, and files; collects statistical data and compiles data for reports
• Supports the relationship between the City of Rosemead and the constituent population by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; and twelve (12) semester units or eighteen (18) quarter units in Early Childhood Education or Child Development from an accredited college or university. Associate's degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or related field is preferred; AND two years working with children in a group childcare program or preschool setting.

Knowledge of:
• City policies and procedures.
• Local, state and Federal laws, regulations, policies and practices governing childcare programs.
• Principles and practices of early childhood education.
• General health and wellness standards for children.
• Early childhood teaching principles and methods.
• Curriculum development and implementation.
• Record keeping and file maintenance principles and procedures.

Skill in:
• Teaching and working with preschool age children.
• Developing age-appropriate curriculum to foster growth and development.
• Promoting a positive learning environment and good personal behavior.
• Providing effective customer service and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
• Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
• Effective verbal and written communication.

License and Certification Requirements:

Must possess or have the ability to obtain an appropriate California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record. Required to obtain American Red Cross Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate within three (3) months of hire date.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Work is performed in classrooms and outdoors at City recreation facilities. May be required to travel to various sites, locations and/or events. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours; employees are required to assume duties of a disaster worker in the event of a locally declared emergency.
