The... Elementary Science Specialist is responsible for overseeing the school’s efforts to ensure that all students have access to and are successful in science education in Grades K-5. The Science Specialist for Elementary School will work closely with students, parents, and faculty helping students understand the wonders of science. The position offers an excellent opportunity to join a highly collaborative team of educators with a focus on innovation in teaching and learning. Candidates should have a strong science and teaching background, and be committed to working with Elementary school aged students.
Responsibilities
• Teach all science classes for students in grades K-5, including planning inquiry-based units and lessons, collecting and assessing evidence of student learning, and providing ongoing feedback to improve student learning.
• Create a healthy and safe learning environment that demonstrates respect for all and supports student success.
• Work closely and collaboratively with the STEM department in curriculum development, analyzing student work, and implementation of mastery-based learning.
• Collaborate with K-12 Arts and Science Departments on projects and school wide events like Science Night.
• Prepare timely and detailed parent communication, both informally through email and phone communication, and formally through reports and conferences.
• Participate in ongoing Professional Learning Community at Pilgrim.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a relevant field. Advanced degree in science and/or science education is strongly preferred.
• At least 5 years teaching experience, preferably within independent schools.
• Highly collaborative spirit and willingness to be part of a team-oriented approach to learning across the school.
• Knowledge and expertise with modern science pedagogy and effective science teaching practices.
• Experience in mastery-based or standards-based grading and assessment methodologies is highly desired. We are a fully mastery-based school, so if the candidate does not have experience, they must be willing to learn.
• Experience and interest in related STEM areas, including mathematics, robotics, engineering, or coding is helpful not required.
• Knowledgeable and passionate about K-12 education, including a strong understanding of the developmental needs of children.
• Highly organized and efficient in time management.
• Superior skills in communication and technology, including outstanding writing and public speaking skills
