JOB SUMMARY:

Edmund Burke School, located in Washington, DC, seeks a High School Learning Specialist to serve as a member of its faculty, starting in August 2026. This is a full-time, 10-month position. A stipend is available for limited summer work.

The Learning Support Department at Edmund Burke School provides support to students with learning differences in grades 6-12. The High School Learning Specialist works with students, offering academic assistance and conducting informal assessments, when necessary. The High School Learning Specialist reviews all psycho-educational testing reports and monitors the use and implementation of accommodations. Additionally, the department advises faculty on best practices for teaching students with learning differences. The High School Learning Specialist also provides outside referrals for tutoring and testing and consults with families regarding academic concerns. The High School Learning Specialist also sits on the High School Support Team, consisting of the Dean of Students, Head of High School, High School Academic Dean, and School Counselor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Meets with students individually for assistance with study strategies, organizational skills, and content area help. If additional or supplementary support is needed, the Learning Specialist provides families with referrals for outside testing and tutoring.
• Conducts classroom observations and/or informal assessments of students who are experiencing difficulty with the classroom curriculum. Recommendations are made to the faculty regarding classroom accommodations and/or referrals are given to the family regarding psycho-educational testing.
• Collaborates with faculty and advisors on teaching strategies that can best serve our students with learning differences, may push into classes to model or implement strategies
• Reviews psycho-educational testing reports, creates and maintains the student’s Learning Profile, meets with the faculty to discuss the student’s academic needs, and monitors the use and implementation of accommodations throughout the year.
• Meets with all parents who have a child with documented learning differences to discuss accommodations and services offered at Burke. The Learning Specialist meets annually with the appropriate faculty members to review the new and returning students with learning profiles.
• Maintains an updated list of tutors for referrals to parents.
• Leads the High School Support Team in creating, implementing, and monitoring efficacy of support plans for students experiencing academic difficulties.
• Provides faculty professional development related to serving neurodiverse students when needed.
• Acts as a member of the Admissions Committee, reviews the psycho-educational testing reports of prospective students, and provides feedback to the Director of Enrollment Management.
• Completes and submits all applications for College Board and ACT accommodations for students with documented learning differences.
• Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience:
• BA required; MA in special education or a related field is preferred.
• 3-5 years of experience in a secondary school setting working with students with learning differences.
• Familiarity with independent schools and progressive philosophy preferred.
