1:1 Student Behavioral Support Paraprofessional

BASIC FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITY

Provide individualized, one-to-one behavioral, social-emotional, and instructional support to an assigned student under the direction of certified and/or licensed staff. Implement established behavior support strategies and individualized plans to promote the student’s safety, engagement, independence, and successful participation in the school environment. Assist with academic and physical needs of the student, as required.

Individualized Behavioral & Student Support

• Provide consistent 1:1 support to an assigned student throughout the school day and across educational settings, which may include classrooms, common areas, transitions, arrival/dismissal, and other campus environments.

• Implement the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), safety plan, and other individualized supports as directed by certified and/or licensed staff.

• Use proactive, positive behavior supports and reinforcement strategies to increase appropriate behaviors, engagement, self-regulation, and independence.

• Recognize behavioral triggers and early signs of escalation and implement established prevention, redirection, and de-escalation strategies.

• Support the student in developing appropriate coping, communication, self-advocacy, social, and self-regulation skills.

• Assist the student with transitions between activities, classes, locations, and staff members while promoting increasing independence.

• Provide appropriate levels of prompting and support while intentionally encouraging the student to complete tasks and navigate the school environment as independently as possible.

• Monitor student behavior and intervene appropriately to maintain the safety of the student and others.

• Respond to behavioral or crisis situations in accordance with the student’s individualized plans, District procedures, and staff training, including approved crisis prevention and intervention techniques when necessary.

• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries while developing a positive, supportive, and respectful working relationship with the assigned student.

Instructional Support

• Support the assigned student’s access to classroom instruction, assignments, activities, and assessments.

• Assist the student with remaining engaged, following classroom routines and expectations, organizing materials, initiating and completing assignments, and requesting assistance appropriately.

• Implement accommodations, modifications, prompting strategies, and instructional supports identified by the student’s educational team.

• Reinforce skills and concepts introduced by certified instructional staff without replacing or interfering with teacher-directed instruction.

• Collaborate with classroom teachers and other staff to ensure behavioral supports are integrated effectively into the student’s instructional environment.

• Support and participate in meeting the objectives of the campus/department improvement plan.

Data Collection & Communication

• Observe, document, and collect behavioral and/or academic data as directed by the student’s educational team.

• Maintain accurate and objective records related to student behavior, interventions, progress, and implementation of individualized supports.

• Communicate relevant observations, patterns, concerns, and student successes to the supervising teacher and/or appropriate members of the student support team.

• Maintain confidentiality of all student information in accordance with FERPA, District policy, and applicable state and federal requirements.

• Participate in student support meetings, staff consultations, or problem-solving discussions when requested.

Collaboration & Campus Support

• Work collaboratively with teachers, special education staff, counselors, administrators, behavior specialists, related-service providers, and other campus personnel to provide consistent support for the assigned student.

• Follow the direction of certified and/or licensed staff regarding behavioral, instructional, and student support strategies.

• Implement behavioral strategies consistently across settings and communicate with staff to promote continuity of expectations and supports.

• Assist in maintaining a safe, structured, predictable, and supportive educational environment.

• Provide assistance to campus staff related to the assigned student's needs as requested.

Organization Improvement

• Work collaboratively with campus staff to improve student supports, services, and programs.

• Contribute to a positive, student-centered campus culture.

Professional Growth and Development

• Participate in professional development related to behavior management, de-escalation, special education, student safety, instructional support, and other areas necessary to effectively support the assigned student.

• Maintain required training and certifications, including Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), First Aid, and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), as applicable.

• Seek and apply feedback from supervising staff to continuously improve the effectiveness of student support.

Academic Excellence Indicators and Campus Performance Objectives

• Support the administration of state-mandated and campus assessments in compliance with the student’s identified accommodations and state and federal guidelines.

School/Community Relations

• Interact professionally and positively with students, employees, families, and community members.

• Direct parent/guardian questions or concerns regarding the student's educational or behavioral program to the appropriate certified or administrative staff member.

• Maintain student confidentiality in all verbal, written, and electronic communication.

Organization Morale

• Participate in team-building activities and the decision-making process as appropriate.

• Communicate and collaborate effectively with campus/department staff to enhance service delivery and student success.

Other Responsibilities

• Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, local Board policy, and District and campus procedures.

• Follow all student-specific plans, safety procedures, and staff directives related to the assigned student.

• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Knowledge of District, campus, classroom, and student support policies and procedures.

• Knowledge of positive behavior support, behavior intervention, and de-escalation techniques.

• Knowledge of techniques used in supporting students with behavioral, emotional, developmental, and/or special education needs.

• Skill in implementing individualized behavioral interventions and supports with consistency and fidelity.

• Skill in observing and objectively documenting student behavior and progress.

• Skill in responding calmly and effectively to challenging or escalating behavior.

• Skill in building positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

• Skill in supporting student independence rather than creating dependence on adult assistance.

• Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing.

• Skill in collaborating with teachers, administrators, special education personnel, behavior specialists, and other members of a student support team.

• Skill in utilizing general instructional strategies and implementing teacher-directed accommodations and modifications.

• Skill in operating standard computer and software applications.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student information.

• Ability to administer Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), First Aid, and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), as required.

• Ability to remain calm, patient, consistent, and professional during stressful or challenging situations.

• Ability to organize and prioritize work responsibilities while remaining responsive to the needs of the assigned student.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent and six months of related experience. Experience working with students with behavioral, emotional, developmental, or special education needs preferred.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS

• Maintain emotional control under stress, including during student behavioral escalation or crisis situations.

• Maintain continuous awareness of the assigned student and respond promptly to behavioral, emotional, instructional, or safety needs.

• Work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in student needs and daily routines.

• Accompany the assigned student throughout various campus settings and activities.

• Sit, walk, stand, stoop, and bend on a frequent basis and assist with mobility or specialized equipment when required by the student's needs.

• Lift, restrain, and move up to 50 lbs., when necessary and consistent with District training and procedures.
