Job Description

Provides American Sign Language (ASL)/Deaf Culture assessment and facilitates and/or advises on appropriate interventions for students, staff, professionals, families at the Ohio Deaf and Blind Education Services and throughout the state of Ohio.

Provides Assessments Of American Sign Language

Evaluates ASL competencies of students, educators, and professionals for Evaluation Team Report (ETR), or Individualized Education Plan (IEP); and the Statewide Services Evaluation Clinic; administers checklists of communication and language skills; prepares reports and develops language recommendations based on evaluations and progress monitoring; provides individualized intervention, focusing on ASL development need areas identified by formal evaluations; coordinates and provides leadership for the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) for Ohio Deaf and Blind Education Services staff, Ohio Public Schools, licensed personnel, and families; participates in post-assessment meetings and provides feedback for school districts and statewide services; assists with professional development for SLPI team in assessment procedures; maintains strict confidentiality regarding assessments.

Builds And Implements Programming For SSO

Implements programming for online learning opportunities for students across Ohio; provides leadership/support to the team in creating content and building the online professional learning.

Leads American Sign Language (ASL) Online Classes

Teaches ASL to Ohio Deaf and Blind Education Services staff; reviews curriculum to provide ideas to leadership for program implementation; works effectively with the ASL Online Team for creation of online course curriculum; creates course content to support program innovation for online coursework; supports leadership in building class schedules for ASL Online courses for school districts in Ohio.

Develops ASL And Deaf Culture Skills

Provides and arranges workshops and educational opportunities for faculty, parents and school districts statewide on ASL and Deaf Culture; provides consultation to Ohio educators regarding signs for content areas; acts as part of a team to recommend or develop appropriate curriculum, teacher resource guides, assessments, materials and equipment.

Disseminates Information Regarding ASL And Deaf Culture

Compiles resources and materials; provides information and resources; provides career awareness information related to Deaf Education to groups and individuals; participates in staff development activities and other duties as assigned.

Maintains Knowledge

Keeps abreast of educational trends affecting deaf and non-deaf students and first and second language learners in ASL; attends professional workshops, seminars and/or courses; meets or willing to obtain ASLTA certification requirements.

Must maintain valid Ohio teaching licensure for grade level, subject area or special class assignment.

Must demonstrate Superior level on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) at hire.

American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) Qualified or Professional certification preferred; Provisional certification required within 1 year of hire.

Knowledge of bilingual educational methods and child language acquisition.

Experience in teaching ASL at the K-12 and/or college level preferred.

B.A – B.S. in ASL Teaching, Deaf Education, or a related field required. (M.A. – M.S. preferred).
