Role Description The Seventh Grade Humanities Special Education Teacher is a full-time, on-site role based in Queens, NY. This educator designs and delivers differentiated instruction in humanities (English Language Arts and Social Studies) to seventh-grade students receiving special education services. Daily responsibilities include planning standards-aligned lessons, adapting curriculum for individual learning needs, implementing IEP goals, and using formative and summative assessments to guide instruction. The teacher collaborates with general education teachers, related service providers, and families to support student progress and ensure compliance with special education regulations. Additional duties may include participating in IEP meetings, maintaining accurate documentation, providing classroom management that supports a positive learning environment, and engaging in school-wide initiatives, professional development, and after-school activities as needed.
Qualifications
• Strong instructional skills in middle school humanities, including reading, writing, and social studies content, with the ability to differentiate for diverse learners.
• Expertise in special education practices, including IEP development and implementation, behavior supports, progress monitoring, and compliance with federal and state regulations.
• Ability to design engaging lesson plans, integrate literacy strategies, and use data-driven instruction to support academic growth for students with a range of learning needs.
• Effective classroom management skills that foster a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment.
• Clear, professional communication skills for collaboration with colleagues, families, and support staff, including participation in team meetings and parent conferences.
• Commitment to equity, inclusion, and the academic and social-emotional development of all students, including those with disabilities.
• Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field; Master’s degree in Special Education or a relevant discipline preferred.
• Valid New York State teaching certification in Special Education (Grades 7–12 or appropriate equivalent); additional certification in ELA or Social Studies is an asset.
• Experience in urban or charter school settings, familiarity with New York State learning standards, and comfort using educational technology to support instruction.
