Job Description

Austin Jewish Academy is seeking an experienced math educator for an anticipated long-term substitute assignment supporting our advanced middle school math program. The substitute will assume responsibility for two course sections, which may include Foundations of Algebra, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, or Algebra 2, while maintaining the established curriculum, pace, and classroom routines. This teacher will provide the rigor, warmth, and continuity our students need while teaching in alignment with AJA's core values: Integrity, Tradition, Empowerment, Community, Excellence, and Tikkun Olam.

Teaching Responsibilities
• Assume full instructional responsibility for two advanced middle school math sections, such as Foundations of Algebra, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, or Algebra 2 using AJA's established curriculum and pacing.
• Plan and deliver daily lessons with clear objectives, appropriate challenges, and opportunities for active and project-based learning.
• Assess student learning through homework, quizzes, tests, projects, and other measures, and use the results to adjust instruction.
• Provide timely, constructive feedback and maintain accurate records of student progress, including grades and report card comments as applicable.
• Build supportive relationships with students and communicate regularly with families and colleagues about student progress and needs.
• Demonstrate strong classroom management consistent with school-wide expectations and Conscious Discipline.
• Collaborate closely with math colleagues and the Assistant Head of School to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of instruction.
• Participate in faculty, team, and family meetings and fulfill supervisory or other school responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree required; a degree in mathematics, math education, or a related field is preferred.
• Successful experience teaching middle school mathematics is strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated content knowledge in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Algebra 2.
• Ability to differentiate instruction and support students with a range of learning needs, including advanced math learners.
• Excellent classroom management, organization, and communication skills.
• Collaborative, flexible, comfortable using instructional technology, and able to step into an established program with confidence and care.
• Must be able to pass a background check.

Assignment and Schedule
• Part-time (approximately 15-20 hours a week), on-site position anticipated to begin as early as August 2026.
• Class Schedule: 10-12pm (M-W); 9:45-12pm (Th); 10:15-12pm (Fri)
• The exact start date and duration will be confirmed based on school needs. The assignment may last several weeks and could extend through the remainder of the 2026-27 school year.

Compensation

Compensation is commensurate with experience and the scope and duration of the assignment.
