Job Overview
The After School Program Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality academic support and enrichment activities for students in a safe, engaging, and supportive environment. This role focuses on implementing literacy interventions, providing structured homework assistance, and facilitating hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) enrichment activities that promote student achievement, creativity, and social-emotional development.The instructor plays a key role in supporting program goals, including increasing students’ reading proficiency and contributing to measurable academic outcomes through targeted instruction, assessment practices, and accurate data entry in the Apricot system.
Program Goals & Outcomes
• Support students in achieving growth of up to two (2) grade levels in reading proficiency, as measured by program assessments.
• Demonstrate understanding and application of the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) to inform instruction and monitor student progress.
• Maintain accurate and timely student data in the Apricot system to support program reporting and compliance.
• Use data to guide literacy intervention strategies and improve student outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Literacy Intervention Implementation
• Implement structured literacy intervention strategies aligned with program curriculum and student needs.
• Utilize DRA levels to group students and deliver targeted, differentiated instruction.
• Support reading development through small group instruction and guided reading.
• Monitor and document student progress toward reading level growth targets.
• Provide regular updates to the Program Director on student outcomes.
2. Homework Support
• Provide daily homework assistance in a structured and supportive environment.
• Help students develop organizational and study skills for independent learning.
• Reinforce academic concepts to strengthen literacy and overall achievement.
• Communicate student progress and concerns to the Program Director.
3. STEAM Enrichment Facilitation
• Plan and facilitate hands-on STEAM activities that promote critical thinking and creativity.
• Implement project-based learning such as experiments, robotics, coding, engineering challenges, and arts integration.
• Encourage collaboration and student engagement.
• Share participation outcomes and engagement updates with the Program Director.
4. Parent & Family Engagement
• Build positive relationships with parents/guardians to support student success.
• Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, attendance, and program updates.
• Encourage family participation in program events, workshops, and activities.
• Provide families with strategies and resources to support literacy and learning at home.
• Support family outreach efforts, including phone calls, messages, and in-person communication.
5. Classroom and Behavior Management
• Maintain a safe, inclusive, and structured learning environment.
• Use trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches to support student behavior.
• Establish clear expectations and routines.
• Report behavioral incidents and successes to the Program Director.
6. Student Engagement and Development
• Build positive relationships with students to foster engagement and confidence.
• Support social-emotional learning and leadership development.
• Recognize and celebrate student progress, especially growth in reading levels.
• Provide feedback on student development aligned with program goals.
7. Program Support, Data Collection & Reporting
• Accurately track student attendance, participation, and academic progress.
• Enter and maintain student data, case notes, and assessment outcomes in the Apricot system in a timely manner.
• Ensure all documentation meets program compliance and reporting requirements.
• Collaborate with staff to review data and adjust strategies to meet program goals.
• Participate in staff meetings and trainings on literacy, data systems, and program expectations.
• Follow direction and performance feedback from the Program Director.
Daily Tasks
• Supervise and check in students at program arrival.
• Facilitate structured homework support.
• Lead small-group literacy intervention sessions using DRA levels.
• Track and document student reading progress.
• Deliver STEAM enrichment activities.
• Record attendance and participation daily.
• Enter or update required student data in the Apricot system.
• Monitor student behavior and support positive engagement.
• Support transitions between program components.
• Communicate daily updates, concerns, and highlights to the Program Director.
• Assist with classroom setup, cleanup, and organization.
Qualifications
• Experience working with elementary-aged students (K–6 preferred).
• Knowledge of literacy development and instructional strategies.
• Familiarity with or willingness to learn DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment).
• Experience with or willingness to learn data systems such as Apricot.
• Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills.
