Special Education Teacher / Assistant Director of Special Education
Department: General Education
Reports To: Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Purpose
The Special Education Teacher / Assistant Director of Special Education provides specially designed instruction to students with disabilities while assisting the Principal with oversight of the campus special education program. The position ensures compliance with IDEA, Section 504, ADA, FERPA, ADE/ESS requirements, district policies, and all applicable timelines. This role supports instructional excellence, coaches staff, monitors compliance, collaborates with families and service providers, and promotes student success through high-quality special education programming.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Provide specially designed instruction aligned with each student's IEP, Section 504 Plan, BIP, HCP, and other individualized plans.
· Develop and deliver standards-based lessons using differentiated, evidence-based instructional practices.
· Implement accommodations, modifications, assistive technology, visual supports, and behavioral interventions.
· Monitor student progress using formal and informal assessments and adjust instruction accordingly.
· Collaborate with general education teachers and related service providers to ensure consistent implementation of services.
· Maintain safe, organized, and inclusive learning environments that promote academic, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional growth.
· Support MTSS, PBIS, intervention programs, and inclusive instructional practices.
· Assist the Principal in overseeing campus special education operations and compliance.
· Review IEPs, evaluations, eligibility documentation, PWNs, progress reports, and service records for accuracy and compliance.
· Monitor federal and state timelines for evaluations, annual reviews, reevaluations, progress reporting, and service delivery.
· Conduct compliance audits and maintain required documentation and tracking systems.
· Coordinate IEP, eligibility, manifestation determination, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
· Identify compliance concerns and implement corrective actions in collaboration with district leadership.
· Provide coaching, mentoring, and professional development to staff regarding instruction, compliance, accommodations, and documentation.
· Analyze instructional and compliance data to improve student outcomes and campus systems.
· Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and all applicable laws.
Family and Staff Collaboration
· Maintain professional communication with families regarding student progress and services.
· Respond to parent concerns in a timely, respectful, and solution-focused manner.
· Collaborate with administrators, teachers, related service providers, and outside agencies to support student success.
· Serve as a campus resource for special education laws, procedures, and best practices.
Professional Responsibilities
· Maintain required Arizona certification, IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card, CPI, CPR, and First Aid certifications as required.
· Participate in leadership meetings, professional development, ADE trainings, and district initiatives.
· Assist with onboarding and mentoring new special education staff.
· Support campus operations and other duties assigned by the Principal.

Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
· Valid Arizona Special Education Teaching Certificate.
· Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
· Administrator certification and leadership training preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, ADA, FERPA, ADE/ESS requirements, and Arizona Academic Standards.
· Knowledge of IEP development, compliance, instructional leadership, MTSS, PBIS, and evidence-based practices.
· Strong leadership, communication, organizational, coaching, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to interpret laws, analyze data, meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities.
· Proficiency with Google Workspace, IEP systems, student information systems, and instructional technology.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to perform classroom instructional duties, supervise students, implement CPI strategies as needed, lift up to 50 pounds, travel throughout campus, communicate effectively, and participate in meetings, training, and occasional after-hours school activities. The position requires collaboration with students, families, staff, community agencies, and ADE representatives while responding appropriately to instructional, behavioral, compliance, and operational needs.
Pay: $70,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
