We are hiring for a Social Studies/Writing Instructor

READ Academy of Sacramento is a specialized, small-school environment serving bright students who learn differently—many with dyslexia and related language-based learning differences. We provide explicit, structured instruction that builds confident readers, writers, and critical thinkers.

We are seeking a Social Studies/Writing Instructor who loves content, loves teaching social studies and writing, and can deliver clear, scaffolded instruction in a supportive, mission-driven setting.

Position Overview

The Social Studies & Writing Instructor teaches engaging, standards-aligned social studies content while explicitly teaching writing skills (sentence structure, paragraphing, organization, revision, and evidence-based responses). The ideal candidate understands that writing is a taught skill and is comfortable using structured routines, models, and feedback cycles to help students grow.

Responsibilities

• Teach Social Studies courses (grade level(s) based on experience and scheduling needs)

• Teach writing as an embedded component of instruction (historical writing, argument, research-based responses, and informative/explanatory writing)

• Provide explicit instruction and scaffolds (guided notes, organizers, sentence frames, models, chunked tasks)

• Differentiate instruction for students with language-based learning differences

• Use formative assessment to drive instruction and provide timely feedback

• Communicate consistently and professionally with families and colleagues

• Maintain accurate grading, documentation, and student support notes

• Participate in staff collaboration, professional learning, and school events as scheduled

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (required)

• Experience teaching Social Studies and/or Writing (elementary, middle school and high school)

• Strong understanding of writing instruction (planning → drafting → revising/editing) and how to teach it explicitly

• Ability to create an organized, structured classroom environment with clear expectations

• Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience teaching students with dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia, or other learning differences

• Familiarity with structured literacy principles (or willingness to be trained)

• Experience with small-group instruction and/or individualized supports

• Comfort teaching research skills and source-based writing (citations, note-taking, outlining)

Why READ Academy

• Small class sizes and a highly supportive team

• Mission-driven work that changes students’ academic trajectories

• Professional development in evidence-based instructional practices

• A school culture that values clarity, structure, and student dignity

Schedule & Compensation

• Position are based on a Monday - Thursday 8:00-4:00 pm schedule.

• In-service days are the 1st Friday of each month.
