Position Overview
The Reading Specialist plays a critical role in accelerating literacy outcomes for students in grades K-2. This educator is an expert in foundational reading development and intervention, with deep knowledge of research-based practices aligned to the science of reading (LETRS or similar training strongly valued).
The specialist provides targeted small-group and individual instruction, partners closely with teachers, supports data analysis, and helps strengthen Tier I and Tier II practices across the campus. This role is ideal for an educator who believes all students can achieve at high levels and is driven to close gaps through precise, systematic instruction.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Student Support
• Provide small-group and one-on-one literacy intervention aligned to student data
• Deliver explicit, systematic instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension
• Implement intervention programs with fidelity and urgency
• Progress monitor students regularly and adjust instruction to ensure growth
Collaboration & Instructional Partnership
• Partner with classroom teachers, intervention staff, and administrators to identify students in need of additional support
• Help problem-solve instructional strategies and accommodations
• Reinforce alignment between core instruction and intervention
• Participate in MTSS and data meetings, bringing clear recommendations and next steps
Data & Assessment
• Analyze universal screener, diagnostic, and progress monitoring data
• Support campus literacy goals through action planning and measurable outcomes
• Maintain accurate documentation of services and student growth
Teacher Support & Capacity Building
• Share resources and strategies that strengthen foundational literacy instruction
• Model lessons, co-teach, or observe and provide feedback when appropriate
• Help cultivate staff understanding of science-of-reading aligned practices
Family Partnership
• Communicate with families about student progress
• Provide practical strategies and resources to support reading development at home
School Community
• Contribute positively to Spero's strong culture and high expectations
• Support shared responsibilities such as arrival, dismissal, and campus routines
• Participate in professional development and coaching with openness and a growth mindset
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree required
• Oklahoma teaching certification preferred
• Experience in early literacy or reading intervention strongly preferred
• Training in the science of reading (LETRS or similar) highly valued
• Skill in using assessment data to drive instruction
