Job Description

Position Objective

The position of Special Education Coordinator-Coach is done for the purpose/s of providing coaching and coordination support to primarily to educators, but also supports schools, administrators, and district leaders in providing specially designed instruction with an emphasis on inclusionary practice for students receiving special education services. Working with special education director(s), as part of the Special Education Leadership Advisory, and at times leading individual project areas, the Special Education Coordinator-Coach supports the delivery of special education services across settings (e.g. writing compliant individualized education plans), implementation of inclusive practices to support student access to curriculum and rigorous standards (e.g. Universal Design for Learning), carry out the special education department priorities, and achieve the districts strategic plan for academic success and a successful post-secondary life. This role involves individual coaching, development of live and asynchronous professional development and technical support, facilitating meetings, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

• Provide coaching support for special educators on writing special education plans (i.e. individualized education plans, behavior improvement plans, etc.).
• Support special educators in case management, leading an IEP team, effectively using paraeducator supports, facilitating difficult conversations, etc.
• Collect and analyze student, school, and program data for continuous improvement.
• Plan and deliver professional development for a variety of audiences both independently and with the Director of Special Education.
• Develop and continuously improve special education procedures and other technical assistance.
• Directly support teachers in effectively implementing the district curriculum and specially designed instruction for students receiving special education services.
• Facilitate curriculum development, improvement and adoptions in general education and special education curriculum.
• Coordinate articulations i.e. into/out of the district, between placements, between grade levels, etc.
• Participate, plan, and/or facilitate department/district level meetings.
• Collaborate with other key district teams in support of students with disabilities, such as teaching and learning curriculum developers, transportation, health services, multi-language learning facilitators, etc.
• Support implementation and reporting of key state, district, and department strategic priorities.
• Lead department/district wide initiatives as needed.
• Research and remain abreast of curriculum/technology issues, programs and needs and of state and national. curricular trends in special education such as inclusionary practices, Universal Design for Learning, disproportionality, etc.
• Other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationships

• Reports directly to and is supervised by Central Office Administration (i.e. Director of Special Education II, III, or IV and Executive Director of Inclusion & Accessibility).

Required

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

• Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement in Special Education.

Preferred

• Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching or ESA (Educational Staff Association) certificate.
• Minimum of three years teaching or ESA experience.

KNOWLEDGE (position Requirements At Entry)

• Experience with coaching novice and experienced educators.
• Deep content knowledge of special education, including special education law, IEP development, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support/differentiation, managing and improving challenging behavior, and effective instruction of students with disabilities
• Thorough knowledge of general education instructional pedagogy, curriculum and standards.

• Ability to work with and lead a diverse group of adults for the purposes of promoting inclusive practices, high quality and rigorous instruction, and adherence to federal, state, and district law and policy.
• Experience using a variety of assessment tools.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• High level technology skills. Eagerness to learn new technology.
• Demonstrates multicultural sensitivity with the ability to effectively and collaboratively work with diverse populations.
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements.
• Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

Conditions Of Employment

$ 73,900 to $ 138,754 (based on the negotiated collective bargaining agreement salary schedule). Certificated staff work the school year contract with placement on the District and BEA bargaining agreement salary schedule. Placement on the schedule is determined by training and experience.

Medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life-insurance eligibility is based upon .45 FTE. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
