Job Description

About the 1973 Project

The 1973 Project is a community health initiative by I’ll Have What She’s Having (IHWSH) that aims to ensure comprehensive reproductive health care access for food and beverage workers in Houston, Texas. Recognizing the knowledge deficit around safe abortion, IHWSH created a program: Girl Talk, or in-person, public roundtables on self-managed abortion (SMA) resources. To scale impact, IHWSH is seeking 3-4 part-time educators to expand the Project by facilitating Girl Talk sessions and implementing outreach strategy.

Girl Talk Educator Role

Girl Talk Educators organize and oversee bimonthly conversations with 8-12 Houstonians. Educators deliver an existing curriculum on self-managed abortion resources and support networks, and answer questions that come up in the session. Educators are expected to assist with outreach for the 1973 Project by planning community-building initiatives, social media content, and events.

This role is for one year. No pre-existing knowledge about SMA is required, only a passion for abortion access, people skills, and a willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and deliver two Girl Talk sessions per month.
• Recruit Girl Talk attendees and hosts via in-person community outreach, such as event tabling and neighborhood visits beyond Central Houston.
• Maintain an active network of Girl Talk alumni by posting in Signal and organizing reunion opportunities.
• Attend bimonthly team meetings with the Project coordinator and team to debrief sessions, stay up to date on the resource landscape, and coordinate outreach.
• Interact/collaborate with other social justice organizations and community spaces.
• Generate social media content and other promotional materials as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Strong interpersonal communication and group facilitation skills.
• Passion and interest in pro-abortion activism.
• Responsive, collaborative, proactive and highly organized.

• Flexible, creative and resourceful.
• Car or other reliable mode of transportation.
• 21+ by May 31st.

Preferred Qualifications

• English and Spanish fluency.
• Full or part-time food and beverage industry worker.
• Prior experience with leading meetings and facilitating group discussions.
