Job Purpose:

At Josephinum Academy of the Sacred Heart, we measure success one student at a time, and we seek to provide an education that meets the needs of the whole child. The Student Services Counselor provides student support and counseling services conducive to the spiritual, academic, social, emotional, and physical growth of our students including, but not limited to, assessing students and families; providing case management; monitoring student progress; and making referrals.

The Counselor acts as an advocate for students’ well-being and serves as a valuable resource for their educational advancements. In addition, the school counselor is responsible for providing direct counseling services, building, and implementing group counseling curriculum, as well as developing and administering preventative programming. This role must be willing to meet the needs of one's own professional development.

Job Responsibilities:

General:

• Collaborate with counselors, social workers, school nurses, teachers, and other staff members to support and encourage positive behavior, daily attendance, and support for standardized assessments.

• Provide social/emotional and academic support to a caseload of students.

• Help inform and provide insight into support and strategies for teachers to help students in the classroom by providing feedback and suggestions to your peers and support them in their teaching efforts.

• Identify and advocate for professional development, strategies, and support to faculty in expanding their awareness and effectiveness of teaching strategies to further assist students in the classroom.

• Be comfortable using information available on PowerSchool and adding data to the platform as needed.

• Assist in data entry of statistical information including, but not limited to demographics, college, scholarship, and testing information.

• Be open to constructive feedback on ways in which you can improve your outreach and communication skills.

• Engage students’ families frequently to celebrate the successes and communicate the challenges.

• Be an active member of the Josephinum faculty and community by participating in extra-curricular activities to support the principal, co-workers, and/or students such as serving on committees, attending school related events, and participating in school related activities that assist in building community and/or knowledge.

• Conduct student staffing meetings when necessary.

• Attend, as requested, faculty meetings to assist in the presentation of professional development opportunities to help increase faculty awareness and enhance skills related to student engagement and support (e.g., emotional intelligence).

• Other duties as assigned by the principal as related to the position.

Academic:

• Collaborate with the Student Services Department on the development and implementation of the schoolwide counseling curriculum.

• Monitor academic progress, attendance, and behavioral concerns of students.

• Complete credit checks for each student on caseload each semester.

• Communicate with guardians about their student's academic successes and challenges.

• Provide individualized academic advisement to students on caseload each semester.

• Work with students to create individualized schedules that align with the student’s post-secondary plans.

• Facilitate the administration of Standardized Testing (PSAT, SAT, etc).

Social/Emotional:

• Manager Tier 1 (social emotional learning) support for students.

• Establish the programmatic elements that support the social and emotional wellness of the students.

• Provide pre- and post-assessment for students to identify their identified needs and determine if those needs have been met.

• Implement counseling small group(s) with CASEL-aligned curriculum(s) that meets the self-identified needs of the students.

• Provide brief individual counseling.

• Assist in peer mediations and crisis management as required.

• Facilitate and/or participate in student staffings at school and in hospital settings on an as needed basis.

• Provide outside resources for students and families for additional support, as well as act as liaison between school and outside agencies that serve our students socially and emotionally.

• Collaborate with department members to evaluate and assess social/emotional needs of students.

Pay: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
