POSITION TITLE: HEALTH ASSISTANT
REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL, ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL, SCHOOL NURSE
Qualifications
• Registered Nurse Licensure in State of Illinois
• Current First Aid and CPR program completion
• IDPH Vision and Hearing certification
Planning
• Consult and collaborate with certified school nurse, teachers, counselors, administrators, and other school personnel concerning the needs of individual students.
• Consult with administration, certified school nurse, instructional staff and parents in areas pertinent to health concerns.
• Participate in mutually beneficial meetings with other health assistants and certified school nurses.
Implementation
• Assist in supervising the maintenance of health records and enforcing state requirements regarding the immunization compliance and physical education provisions.
• Counsel students, parents and staff regarding matters of health, acting as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies and the private medical sector.
• Supervise and/or administer first aid as applicable.
• Inform certified school nurse of services provided for Medicaid reimbursement.
Evaluation
• Assist certified school nurse with control and report of communicable diseases.
• Observe and report unsafe conditions.
INTERACTION WITH STUDENTS
• Communicate effectively with students' and parents.
• Identify student health problems and concerns as well as assessing their health status, make referrals and providing appropriate health counseling for students, parents and school staff.
• Readily available to students and parents.
INTERACTION WITH STAFF, TOTAL SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY
• Communicates and works with appropriate support personnel.
• Communicates and works with other staff members and administrators.
• Cooperates and communicates with parents/guardians.
• Shares ideas, materials and methods with certified school nurse.
Professional Responsibilities
• Participate in department meetings and professional projects as directed by the Director of Nursing.
• Adheres to school regulations and board policies.
• Responds appropriately to concerns initiated by parents/guardians.
• Completes duties effectively and promptly.
• Maintains regular attendance and is punctual.
• Follows the Teachers' Handbook and District Policy Manuel as required measurements of expectations and requirements.
Desirable Qualifications/Skills
Experience in hospital nursing/clinic and a school setting.

All employees must adhere to district Board Policy, administrative procedures, and the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CHSD 218 Support Staff Agreement, I.E.A. Local 218). Employees in this role are subject to all relevant Illinois and federal laws governing the education and employment of individuals with disabilities, including IDEA, ADA, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Mandated training requirements must be completed as directed.
Salary & Benefits
• The 2026-2027 hourly rate for Health Assistants is $30.00 based on 177 days *7.5 hours annually or $39,825.00
