Job Description
Position Summary: The Instructional Assistant for Special Education provides support to the classroom teacher and assists in the instruction, supervision, and care of students with special needs. The assistant helps to create a positive learning environment that fosters independence, inclusion, and growth for students with diverse learning and behavioral challenges. The assistant works under the supervision of the special education teacher and follows individualized education plans (IEPs) to meet students' academic, social, and emotional needs.
Key Responsibilities:
• Instructional Support:
• Assist the teacher in implementing instructional strategies, activities, and accommodations as outlined in students' IEPs.
• Provide one-on-one or small-group support to students during lessons and activities.
• Modify and adapt educational materials to meet the learning needs of students.
• Assist in reinforcing academic content, life skills, and social skills as directed by the teacher.
• Behavioral Support:
• Monitor and support students' behavior in accordance with their behavior intervention plans (BIPs) or individualized programs.
• Implement positive reinforcement strategies and manage challenging behaviors following school guidelines and teacher direction.
• Assist students in developing appropriate social interactions and coping mechanisms.
• Classroom and Environmental Support:
• Help create a safe and supportive classroom environment conducive to learning.
• Assist in the physical setup of classroom spaces and instructional materials, ensuring accessibility for students with disabilities.
• Supervise students during non-instructional times (recess, lunch, transitions) to ensure their safety and inclusion.
• Collaboration and Communication:
• Work closely with the special education teacher, general education staff, and other support personnel to ensure coordinated and consistent support for students.
• Communicate regularly with the teacher about student progress, needs, and any challenges that arise during instructional time.
• Attend team meetings and training sessions to discuss student needs and best practices for supporting special education students.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree or higher preferred).
• Experience working with children, especially in a special education or related setting.
• Knowledge of child development and understanding of special education practices (preferred).
• Ability to work effectively with students who have diverse needs and learning styles.
• Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and a compassionate attitude toward students with special needs.
Qualifications

• Experience working with children in educational settings
• Knowledge of special education practices, including Individualized Education Programs (IEP)
• Strong communication and behavior management skills
• Experience in curriculum development and lesson planning
• Background in literacy education and math instruction
• Preferred: Experience with deaf education, autism, and developmental disabilities
• Preferred: Certification in American Sign Language or early childhood education
