Library Media Specialist
Position Summary
The Library Media Specialist collaborates with teaching staff in the development of student literacy through the administration of the library media program. Provides instruction in and access to library information resources and programs for students, staff and the entire school community. Oversees the selection, organization, utilization, and maintenance of library, information, and curriculum resources.
Essential Duties
• Collaboratively plans, teaches and evaluates, with classroom teachers, instructional lessons or units, which integrates information literacy and/or technology skills into the classroom curriculum.
• Provides instruction in the use of technology to access information outside the library media center.
• Uses a wide variety of teaching methods, media, and ways of communicating information to insure that students can access and use all types of information sources.
• Promotes and demonstrates the use of new technologies and media with teachers and other adults.
• Provides access to information and resource services for all students, staff and community users.
• Makes resources available to students and teachers through a systematically developed collection within the school: manages selection and ordering of materials through a process, which involves teachers, administrators, students, and parents; administers budgets for library media resources.
• Provides access to the library media center collection and instructional materials through the management of an accurate and efficient organization and retrieval system. Assists students in identifying, locating and interpreting information found in both print and digital resources.
• Provides access to the library media center throughout the school day to classes, small groups, individual students, teachers, staff, and parents.
• Develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure equitable access to information.
• Informs teachers, students, parents, and administrators of new materials, equipment and services that meet their information needs.
• Participates in department, grade-level, school, and district curriculum development and assessment projects. Assists teachers in the selection and purchase of instructional materials, and in the use of information resources.
• Recommends student-level literature to teachers and encourages them to read to their classes as well as reading personally for an awareness of the literature available.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• To ensure continuity of services, alternative work site may be necessary in the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation that requires the closing of school and/or office buildings. An employee’s eligibility for alternative work site will be determined by the superintendent of schools. Expectations and guidelines for alternative work site will be distributed by the employee’s supervisor, based on his/her role and responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills And/or Abilities Required)
• Master of Library and Information Studies, or Master of Education in School Library Media Education.
• A current Oklahoma School Library Media Specialist or Librarian certificate.
• The library media specialist is an integral part of the instructional team. He/she fosters a positive attitude toward the use and communication of information by students and teachers and creates an environment where literature and language are valued.
• Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills And/or Abilities)
• Successful experience as a classroom teacher.
• Library media specialist experience.
Physical/Mental Requirements
• Must have adequate manual dexterity to write legibly and perform required duties on the computer.
• Must have adequate visual acuity to read, interpret and transcribe written material and other required duties.
• Requires normal range of hearing and clear speaking abilities to interact appropriately with others in person and on the telephone.
• Requires some stooping, bending, stretching and occasional lifting not to exceed 50 pounds.
• Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
• May periodically require work outside of normal business hours, including weekends, under sometimes stressful conditions in order to meet business needs and strict deadlines.
Work Environment
Office duties will be performed in a well-lighted, climate-controlled environment.
