Job Summary
Maintains grounds around District buildings and facilities in a clean, neat and orderly condition; collects and disposes of rubbish; plants, fertilizes and cares for lawns and shrubs, using power mowers and other hand and power equipment; operates power spraying and other equipment in controlling weeds and pests; prepares and treats soils for planting; trims and prunes trees and hedges; prepares athletic fields for contests; assists with the installation of fences and playground equipment; spades and cultivates flower beds; waters areas not covered by automatic sprinkler systems; may help set up facilities for special events; may help move furniture and equipment; drives vehicles and trucks; may perform incidental maintenance work or assist in the performance of custodial duties on rainy days.
Job Description / Essential Elements:
WASHINGTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFICATION: GROUNDSKEEPER II SALARY RANGE: 34 GROUP: MAINTENANCE/OPERATIONS/TRANSPORTATION DATE OF ADOPTION/REVISION: 01/22/09 DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, to perform a variety of grounds maintenance, gardening and semi-skilled maintenance work, including the operation and maintenance of motorized equipment; and to do related work as required. Typical duties will include, but are not limited to performing a full range of gardening and grounds maintenance work including the collection and disposal of rubbish; planting, fertilizing and caring for lawns and shrubs; using power mowers and other hand and power equipment; operating power spraying and other equipment in controlling weeds and pests; preparing and treating soils for planting; trimming and pruning trees and hedges; preparing athletic fields for contests; installing or repairing fences and playground equipment; spading and cultivating flower beds; helping set up facilities for special events; helping move furniture and equipment; and performing routine semi-skilled maintenance work when assigned. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an appropriate California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles; maintain a driving record acceptable for coverage under District vehicle insurance programs. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: - Tools, materials, equipment and standard practices used in grounds semi-skilled maintenance work; - Planting, cultivating and caring for lawns, shrubs, flowers and trees; - Routine maintenance of grounds keeping equipment; - Safe and efficient use of herbicides, pesticides and chemicals and knowledge of their proper use; - Safe work practices. AND Ability to: - Operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools and power-driven equipment utilized in grounds semi-skilled maintenance work; - Perform heavy physical labor; - Follow oral and written direction; - Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work. AND Training and experience: -Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain such knowledge and abilities would be: Three years of previous work experience in grounds-keeping and semi-skilled trade work. Physical Abilities: • Work is mostly outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions. • Frequently require the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist at the waist, reach above and below the shoulders, perform neck extension, flexion and rotation, and perform repetitive arm and shoulder motions with moderate exertion. • Occasional sitting, standing, squatting, and climbing • Requires the ability to lift up to 80 pounds, move items up to 50 pounds and carry up to 50 feet on a frequent basis. • Pushing, pulling, and guiding over 50 pounds on an occasional basis. • Ability to climb and use ladders safely. • Stoop, bend, squat, kneel, crouch, and reach above and below the shoulders on a regular basis • Sufficient hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp • Visual acuity to operate equipment and read technical and safety information. • Must be able to perform heavy physical labor with or without assistance.
