Primary Purpose:

To provide targeted instruction to recent immigrant and newcomer students through the High School Intensive Language Academy (HILA). The HILA Teacher supports students in developing foundational English language skills while also building academic readiness across content areas. The teacher will use sheltered instruction strategies to help students transition successfully into mainstream classes.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited university

• Valid Texas teaching certification with ESL Supplemental required

• Certification in one or more of the following preferred:

• English Language Arts (9–12)

• Generalist (4–8 or EC–6)

• Bilingual Education (if applicable)

• Knowledge of second language acquisition strategies and newcomer supports

• Experience working with immigrant or refugee student populations preferred

• Strong classroom management, cultural responsiveness, and instructional differentiation skills

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Language and Academic Instruction

• Deliver structured English language instruction with a focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

• Implement sheltered instruction strategies to support comprehension and engagement across subject areas.

• Teach content through language-rich, culturally relevant lessons that accelerate language acquisition and academic growth.

• Support for Newcomer Transition

• Support students in adjusting to U.S. school systems, routines, and expectations.

• Build trusting relationships with students to foster confidence, motivation, and belonging.

• Integrate lessons that support social-emotional learning and cultural orientation.

• Assessment and Progress Monitoring

• Monitor student progress in language development and academics using formative and summative assessments.

• Maintain accurate records of student performance and growth in LPAC, TELPAS, and classroom data.

• Use data to inform instruction and adjust interventions as needed.

• Collaboration and Communication

• Collaborate with ESL and core content teachers to align academic support.

• Participate in LPAC meetings and communicate student needs with staff and families.

• Provide feedback and suggestions for ongoing program improvement.

• Professionalism and Compliance

• Ensure all instruction aligns with federal and state requirements for English Learners.

• Attend district professional development related to ESL, newcomer instruction, and trauma-informed practices.

• Uphold professional conduct, confidentiality, and district expectations at all times.

Working Conditions:

• Maintain emotional control under stress.

• Frequent standing, walking, and technology use.

• Occasional lifting of materials up to 25 pounds.

Diverse classroom with varying levels of English proficiency.

• Salary is commensurate with experience

• Minimum Salary $66,000 for fully certified teachers

• Please note that this role requires in-person attendance and is not eligible for remote work.

• Works 187 Day Contract
