Shakopee Public Schools is seeking a full-time Human Resources Specialist to join our team. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, organized, and service-driven professional who is passionate about benefits administration and leave management, maintaining a global Human Resources mindset.
As a key member of the Human Resources team, this position supports employees and leaders by ensuring benefit and leave programs are administered accurately, consistently, and in compliance with district policies and applicable laws. Key Responsibilities
Benefits Administration
• Administer employee and retiree benefit programs, including medical, dental, life, and long-term disability plans
• Serve as the primary liaison with insurance carriers for enrollment, eligibility, and issue resolution
• Coordinate open enrollment, insurance meetings, and employee information sessions
• Collaborate with payroll to ensure accurate and timely benefit deductions
• Interpret contract language to determine benefit eligibility across bargaining units
• Administer benefits for employees on leave, including applicable payments and deductions
• Manage pre- and post-employment tax-advantaged accounts
• Maintain confidential benefit records and ensure accurate reporting to governmental agencies
• Promote employee awareness and engagement in benefit, leave, and wellness programs
Leave Management & Compliance
• Serve as the primary contact for employee leave requests, including FMLA, PFML, parental leave, and long-term disability
• Ensure leave programs are administered in compliance with applicable laws and district policies
• Support workers' compensation administration, including claim coordination, tracking, and reporting
• Ensure timely and accurate reporting of work-related injuries
• Assist in ADA accommodation processes, including documentation and coordination of reasonable accommodations
• Partner with HR staff to coordinate transitional (light duty) work plans
• Maintain communication with employees on extended leave to support successful return-to-work transitions
HR Operations & Collaboration
• Partner with HR team members and district leaders to support HR programs, initiatives, and daily operations
• Interpret and apply contract language related to benefits, leave, and workers' compensation
• Contribute to process improvements and projects that enhance organizational effectiveness
• Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
• 3-5 years of experience in Human Resources or related field, with emphasis on benefits and leave administration preferred
• Working knowledge of FMLA, PFML, ADA, ACA, Workers' Compensation, Section 125, and HIPAA preferred
• Experience administering medical, dental, life, and long-term disability plans preferred
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and HRIS systems
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with mathematical aptitude
• Effective communication and collaboration skills
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Compensation & Benefits
Salary
$57,672 - $106,000 annually
Typical hiring range: $68,000 - $78,000, based on experience and qualifications
