This role will help advance City Year’s mission by providing crucial mentorship and targeted educational support to students in need.
Role and Responsibilities:
As an In-School Academic Mentor, your primary focus will be to enhance students’ academic abilities while fostering their personal growth. This role includes offering direct support in classrooms, personalized tutoring, and mentorship aimed at achieving measurable educational outcomes.
• Provide individual and small group tutoring in key academic subjects, such as math, reading, and science.
• Model positive behaviors and demonstrate essential social-emotional skills to students.
• Build trusting relationships with students to encourage both academic and personal growth.
• Work closely with teachers and school staff to identify and assess student needs and track progress.
• Develop and implement strategies to increase student engagement and enhance academic performance.
• Use data to assess student progress and guide instructional planning.
Required Skills and Experience:
• A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
• Experience working with students in educational or mentorship roles.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan and deliver focused academic support.
• A commitment to supporting student development and advancing educational equity.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Previous tutoring or mentoring experience in an academic setting.
• Understanding of approaches that support diverse learning needs and social-emotional development.
• Experience using data-driven methods to evaluate and improve student outcomes.
