Job Description
Position Summary: The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) responsible for promoting the health of over 1 million school students enrolled in approximately 1,600 public and non-public schools in New York City; services to students include case management of chronic health problems, preventive health screening, urgent care, medication administration, preventive counseling, health education, referral for care and ensuring ongoing effective treatment.
Under general direction, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgement, Medical Unit Accommodations Manager will provide organizational, administrative and clinical support to the Medical Unit Accommodations. Performs related work.
Reports to: Medical Director, OSH, DOHMH
Direct Reports: Public Health Advisors, Principal Administrative Associates and Medical Unit Accommodations Coordinator.
Key Relationships: Works closely with DOHMH, OSH and staff members.
Responsibilities
• Lead the Medical Unit Accommodations team and optimize ongoing strategic processes to foster greater accountability and productivity.
• Supervise Public Health Advisors, Principal Administrative Associates, Medical Unit Accommodations Coordinators, and temporary staff.
• Provide effective and clear communication of program vision, goals, and expectations to the Medical Unit Accommodations Team.
• Provide task standards and annual staff evaluations.
• Collaborate and partner with other DOHMH, OSH, NYCPS members/officials and other external sources to ensure that the Medical Unit works cohesively to ensure timely processing and completion of student accommodation requests.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members in developing and implementing new program policies and procedures as needed.
• Troubleshoot process delays and identify solutions to resolve issues.
• Oversee Medical Unit Accommodations databases and ensure data integrity.
• Utilize OSH data systems and Medical Unit databases to generate reports for service analysis and operational and productivity assessments.
• Develop tools to optimize operations, quality, and performance improvements.
• Work with Medical Unit leadership to develop strategic plans for service improvement.
• Train unit staff, physician and liaison staff to use the Automated Student Health Record (ASHR) to process and complete accommodation requests.
• Manage physician accommodation schedules and case assignments.
Qualification Requirements
Minimum
• A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, educational psychology, educational leadership, public administration, public policy, social work, or a closely related field, and two years of satisfactory, full-time progressively responsible professional experience in education administration, in such areas as: portfolio planning, educational grants/funding, student enrollment, assessment and accountability, youth development, special education, early childhood, program evaluation, policy research, college and career readiness, health and wellness, immunization, diagnostic and treatment services for parents and children, out of school programs, career and occupational education, curriculum development, evaluation and testing, educational planning, and educational statistics, or a related field, at least 18 months of this experience must have been in an executive, managerial, consultative, administrative or supervisory capacity in education administration; or
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and four years of satisfactory, fulltime progressively responsible professional experience, in one or more of the areas as described in “1” above, at least 18 months of which must have been in an executive, managerial, consultative, administrative or supervisory capacity; or
• A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory, full time professional experience, in one or more of the areas as described in “1” above, at least 18 months of which must have been in an executive, managerial, consultative, administrative or supervisory capacity; or
• Education and/or experience equivalent to “1”, “2”, or “3” above. Undergraduate education above the high school level may be substituted for professional experience, in the areas described in “1” above, at the rate of 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university for each year of experience, up to a maximum of 4 years. Graduate education in areas other than those mentioned above, may be substituted for the professional experience, at the rate of 15 graduate semester credits from an accredited college or university, for 6 months of experience, up to a maximum of 1 year of professional experience. However, all candidates must have a high school diploma or its educational equivalent and 18 months of experience in an executive, managerial, consultative, administrative or supervisory capacity in education administration as described above.
Preferred
• Master's level training in the human service field, with specific training and experience in child development, common child psychiatric disorders, and mental health education.
• Ability to work effectively with school principals, professionals, and other personnel from a wide range of social institutions and organizations.
• Experience working in a clinical setting; familiarity with the NYCPS/DOHMH and educational accommodations.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications.
• Strong presentation skills.
• Knowledge of emotional intelligence.
• Ability to travel throughout the five boroughs.
Salary: $102,286- $120,000
(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
